Andie had it all planned out.

When you are a politician’s daughter who’s pretty much raised yourself, you learn everything can be planned or spun, or both. Especially your future.

Important internship? Check.

Amazing friends? Check.

Guys? Check (as long as we’re talking no more than three weeks)

But that was before the scandal. Before having to be in the same house with her dad. Before walking an insane number of dogs. That was before Clark and those few months that might change her whole life.

Because here’s the thing - if everything's planned out, you can never find the unexpected.

And where’s the fun in that?

The Unexpected Everything is everything you want a summer-y book to have. I'm not gonna lie but this is my first Morgan Matson book I've ever read (I know, I know! I will resolve this soon by buying all her other books *wink*) but it's such a great book to start with. My emotions were everywhere and I seriously fell in love with the story and the characters and the relationships in this book. I can say now that I've found my favorite YA contemporary in 2016. I'm not sure someone can top this lovely.

I will definitely reread this one this summer. Don't be afraid of the 496-pages because by the end of it, you'll want more! I was like that - aka me at 1 in the morning - after finishing TUE, I was like sending text messages to a friend of mine (Sue @SueYAHollywood) telling her this book was so good and I fell in love so hard with Clark *hi my new book boyfriend* I'm so happy how much I LOVED this book, I needed this fluffiness in my life - and I seriously think everyone needs it.

  • There's family dynamics + friendships that last forever. The relationship between Andie and her dad is so great to see on print. Sometimes you see lots of bad parenting in YA books and I'm like "but that isn't always the case!!!" When you encounter a book that has such great and healthy and happy dynamics between family members is such a joy to read to be honest.
  • And the friendships of course! It's also a good point in this book. When your girlfriends are there for each other throughout anything and it's a cute summer holiday - you got a good recipe. Andie is there for the summer and it's the first time she has been with all of her friends. They all have summer jobs/things to do so she has to get a job too.
  • Enter the DOG WALKING JOB! Since the first time I saw that gorgeous cover I knew I would love this book the way I do right now. It's so unbelievable cute, I want to stare at it for eternity. And Sue has shown me the inner jacket and holy!!! It's out-of-this-world cute.
  • Clark is another check mark. This boy nearly killed me. His adorbs smile and his nervous quirks whenever he was with Andie made me melt. I'm like super sure I'm in love with him and please I want one for my own. WHERE DO I FIND A CLARK IN MY LIFE?!!? Thanks Morgan for writing Clark, I seriously will drool every time I remember him.
Overall this was such an amazing book I didn't want  to put it down. My heart became full and my smile big. I just can't wait more book from MM, hopefully soon heh!

Morgan Matson was born in New York City and grew up there and in Greenwich, Connecticut. She attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, but halfway through a theater degree, she started working in the children’s department of Vroman’s Bookstore and fell in love with YA literature.

Following college graduation (and the proud bearer of an incredibly useful theater/English degree) she received her M.F.A. in Writing for Children from The New school and worked as an editor for YA novels. She received a second M.F.A. (for reasons that made sense at the time) in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California.

Her novels have been translated into dozens of languages, and published all over the world.

  1. Well your review has made me extra excited for this book (also love the images on your post). I've read a few Morgan Matson books and so was already quite excited for this one. She always writes the most fantastic friendships so I can't wait to see what happens in this one. Who doesn't need a good summer read?
