The Book Voyagers

"Oh, you're a reader? That's great. I always want to read more. What would you recommend?"

*Cue Panic Attack*
*Takes deep breath and notices the person is still waiting for an answer*

“I don’t know. I can’t really think of anything. I’ll get back to you!” ::runs away::

The interesting thing about this interaction is that 1) it occurs at least once per week and my response is exactly the same each time and 2) that without the direction question, I will almost certainly start talking about books I’ve loved, recently read, or somehow tangentially relate to the current conversation topic. But as soon as I’m asked for a book recommendation I actually have zero recommendations! Two such incidents have resulted in actual blog posts for specific people, my friends Jennifer and Laura (names linked) because I promised them that I would “think about it” and get back to them. Ridiculous. I don’t think either of them thought it would be such a big flipping deal!

So, those Page Turner posts inspired a “Regular feature” idea, which is premiering here on my guest post for The Book Voyagers. Clearly, I’m columbusing the use of the word “premier” here as I’ve already said: this isn’t actually the first one, just the first without a specific person in mind. Let us not get distracted with technicalities. Carry on.

Young Adult:
If someone asks me about a Young Adult novel for the next one million years I will probably automatically talk about The Winner’s Curse, The Unwind Dystology, or The Six of Crows, all of which I have basically mentioned at every possible opportunity (like this one). However, not everyone wants to commit to a multi-book series. So, this time around, my recommendation is The Weight of Feathers by Anna - Marie McLemore. I’ve mentioned before that this book clearly deserves a full review. It is a wonderfully written, magical story of two families at war with each other when shock among shocks, their teenage offspring meet and can’t stop thinking about each other. It’s got new YA magic with classic Romeo and Juliet appeal.

All- American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely is also a great read for the socially conscious minded. The story of a boy brutalized the police told from his perspective and the perspective of his classmate.

A Comic:
Beauty by Jeremy Haun.
Beauty is about a virus that is spread by sexual contact that makes the infected beautiful: clear skin, taut skin, supple whatever. But it’s still a disease. Should it be stopped? Is there a cure? What is the price of beauty and is it really worth the price? Generally, when I recommend comics to non-reader types I recommend that they pick up the trade paperbacks, the version of the book that is about 4-6 comics in one handy dandy edition.

A Grownup Book:
Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson.
This is a thriller about a woman who loses her memory for the last few years every time she goes to sleep for the night. She has started keeping notes and trying to piece her life back together. The reader comes along with her for the ride. This is now a movie so it also fits as a recommendation for Books that were Turned into Movies, Books to Read Before (or instead of) Seeing the Movie, and Movies I will Never See Because They Will Undoubtedly Muck It Up.

Today I am here to talk about a somewhat controversial subject in the world of book bloggers. And what is that? eBooks and Audiobooks. I always see posts hating on kindles and Audiobooks. They say it isn’t true reading unless the words are physically in front of you. Because of these posts, I used to never read eBooks or listen to Audiobooks. I was afraid of being judged. Now, I love both. This post is inspired by Ariel Bissett’s recent video where she discusses Audiobooks. Hopefully after reading this post, you will consider picking an Audiobook or an eBook for your next read.

Perks of Reading An Audiobook
1.You can read anywhere!
There are some places you can’t physically read (driving, walking, cleaning, cooking, etc.) Audiobooks allow you to read when you otherwise can’t. Personally, I like coloring in adult coloring books while listening.

2. Reading in The Car Luckily,
I can read in the car. Many people get car sick if they read in a car. Audiobooks solve this. You can listen to an Audiobook, instead of just gazing out the window. Unless you enjoy that. If you do, good for you, but I don’t like that.

3. Reading Faster
Many people *cough* me *cough* have a difficult time staying focused. Trying to watch movies with me is awful because I can’t sit still. It’s slowly coming into my reading life. Audiobooks are terrific because you can draw, doodle, clean, etc. while listening to keep your attention. I usually have to be fiddling with my hands when trying to focus, and it’s hard to do that with a physical book. But you can do that with Audiobooks. If you are a slow reader, then Audiobooks read the story to you so it’ll take as long as the recording is.

Perks of Reading an eBook
1. Baggage
Kindles are very light, especially when you are travelling! If you are going on vacations for several weeks, it’s hard to bring six hardcover books on vacation with you.

2. New Releases
Getting new releases are simple when it comes to kindle. If you pre order the book, it will be delivered to your Kindle as soon as it is released. You don’t have to wait for the mailman to bring it or go to the bookstore to buy it.

3. No Light Needed (This only applies if you have a Kindle Fire, iPad, etc.)
This happens to me all the time: I turn off my light, climb into bed, and now I’m not tired. I usually then get on Twitter when I could have been reading. With Kindles and eBooks on cell phones, you can read in the dark when you otherwise couldn’t.

So, I want to listen to an Audiobook now. How do I find one?
  • Audible: I personally don’t listen to Audiobooks by Audible, but I know you can use it to get them. However, Audiobooks are quite expensive. *The Book Voyagers says: There's sometimes sales!*
  • iTunes: Again, Audiobooks are expensive. I wouldn’t recommend using iTunes for Audiobook purchasing.
  • OverDrive: (This is what I use). In Oklahoma, we have Oklahoma Virtual Library, where you can borrow eBooks and Audiobooks for free. You can listen/read on your computer/cell phone/tablet/etc.
  • YouTube: some books have the full Audiobook on YouTube. You can find some classic books there, but I recommend this as a last resort.
So, I want to read an eBook now. How do I get one?
  • Kindle Store: You can purchase eBooks on your kindle. Most of the time they are less expensive than the publisher’s price.
  • OverDrive: (This is what I use). You can check out eBooks and read them on your browser or on an electronic device (kindle, iPad, phone, etc).
  • iBooks: iBooks is basically Apple’s version of the Kindle Store.
I hope after reading this post, you guys consider using an Audiobook or eBook as your next read. What is your opinion on Audiobooks and eBooks? Let me know down below. Thanks for reading! And a HUGE thank you to Silvana and Mana for allowing me to guest post!

Title: As Good As New
Series: Something New #4
Author: Jennifer Dawson
Publisher: Kensington Publishing
Publishing: March 29th, 2016
Links: Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Kobo
Rating:

Goodreads blurb:
He was the high school hottie. She was the teacher's pet. But in private, none of that mattered...

At the tender age of six, Penelope Watkins fell for her best friend's brother, Evan Donovan, future hunk. By the time they were teenagers, they were having heart-to-hearts…and hot and heavy top secret make-out sessions. All that changed when Evan's father suddenly died. Abruptly, Penelope lost him to grief--and to his true love: football. But now an injury had ended Evan's NFL career. The notorious bad boy was in a depression no one could penetrate, except maybe the one woman who still knew him best--and still wanted him most…

Penelope is the last person Evan wants to witness the wreck he's become. So when she shows up at his door he's less than welcoming--even though the sight of her brings back the same old rush of desire. As a teenager, the emotions overwhelmed him. Now, when he wanted to be overwhelmed, Penelope wasn't playing. She was telling the golden boy it was time to man up. It may have taken a concussion for Evan to realize it, but that's exactly what he wants to do--starting with her…
As always, Jennifer Dawson deliver a romance contemporary that fills me with so many emotions and caring for the Something New cast.

I'm 1000% in love with this cast of characters. I have been since Maddie's book. I love the friendships and how close they are. We have the Donovans - Maddie and her three brothers, Shane, James and Evan. And AS GOOD AS NEW is Evan's turn to have his happy ending. And the only woman who has his heart is none other than Penelope, Maddie's best friend since kids.

It's one of those books that you just love from the start. Evan and Pen know each other since they were six years old and Penelope has loved Evan since then, she even declared she was going to marry him one day. Of course, things don't go as planned and many years later - adults already - they find themselves having a silent agreement: no talking to each other, no being alone together, no talking of the past. No ones knows they once were something more in their teenage years, so the secret died with them. But now Evan wants everything with Pen and Pen is more confused than ever to believe this boy who broken once her heart.

The story is magical and Dawson's writing makes you wish in stars and love at first sight and summer loves and friendships that last forever (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
"Penelope?"
She met his gaze. "Yes?"
"It was always you. I've always wanted you, even at my most terrible."
The chemistry (and the hot factor!) between these two lighted up my world. It was steam and flames and the sun shone brighter I bet. They could burn with only looking at each other and I'm still surprised no one found out these two wanted each other so BAD.

I'm happy about Gracie and Penelope's closeness in this book. Gracie is the cutest thing in the world and it made me happy she's the one who gets some of the screentime more than the other characters. And... James, it's always a thrill to see you again. These two lovelies make me into a gooey mess.

I hope there are more Something New books because I'm always enjoying them and I have such a good time getting into these small town/big city romances! *whispers* I love that they're all rich and successful characters lol

Jennifer Dawson grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and graduated from DePaul University with a degree in psychology. She met her husband at the public library while they were studying. To this day she still maintains she was NOT checking him out. Now, over twenty years later they’re married living in a suburb right outside of Chicago with two awesome kids and a crazy dog.

Despite going through a light FM, poem writing phase in high school, Jennifer never grew up wanting to be a writer (she had more practical aspirations of being an international super spy). Then one day, suffering from boredom and disgruntled with a book she’d been reading, she decided to put pen to paper. The rest, as they say, is history.

These days Jennifer can be found sitting behind her computer writing her next novel, chasing after her kids, keeping an ever watchful eye on her ever growing to-do list, and NOT checking out her husband.

Title: Right of First Refusal
Series: Radleigh University #2
Author: Dahlia Adler
Publisher: Smashwords Edition
Pages: 340 pages

Goodreads synopsis:
On the lacrosse field, Cait Johannssen gets what she wants. Off the field is another story. Because what she wants is the school's hot new basketball student-coach, Lawrence Mason, who also happens to be the guy who broke her heart in sports camp two years earlier.

But it's Cait's new roommate who's got him.

Cait and Mase agree it's best to keep their past a secret, but she doesn't expect him to completely ignore their history...or how much it'll hurt when he does. So when a friend on the basketball team asks her to pose as his girlfriend for a night, Cait can't turn down the opportunity for distraction. (Okay, and a little spite.) But what starts as an evening of fun turns into a fake relationship with more lies than the usually drama-free Cait can handle, and it's only keeping her from the one truth that's nagged at her for years: Why did Mase cut her out of his life to begin with?

And is it really too late to get him back?
In Right and First Refusal, Adler has all the right elements to make a book good for me; sports, fake dating, second chance romance, diversity. I don't know how to tell you how much fun I had while reading this book. I've been waiting a long time for the books of the rest of the trio of friends this series has: Lizzie, Cait and Frankie. This is Cait's book and as always, this story starts with a bang!
"The stream of profanity that rings through my dorm room is made a thousand times funnier by the fact that it's French. Inexplicably so, since my Filipina-American former roommate is the one yelping it. It's hard to run and help her when all I wanna do is laugh, but, it is my stuff I'm pretty sure she just dropped on her foot, so."
I say this a lot of times but I really really adored Dahlia Adler's books. They are just so... REAL. And it hits you right in the chest where it hurts the most and you think Wow, she got it so right. And I thought about this book just the same. First loves, second chances, the love of a sport, college classes and projects, crazy parties with friends, fun times with your best friends, and those conversations in the dark that you just don't want to forget.

Following my love at first sight with this book when I read that first paragraph, I fell more in love when I met Lawrence Mason. More like Mase, nicknamed by Cait. He is the boyfriend of Cait's new roommate, but what we find out is that he happens to be Cait's ex-boyfriend and their love was the kind that you feel deeply and just so perfect at the time. Mase was there for her throughout everything and then suddenly, he stopped. He stopped sending emails, calls, everything.

Mase made me smile so damn hard. It was so clear those two still had something going on and I'm surprised some people didn't catch up to this fact. They stares at each other, were awkward whenever they met accidentaly, really really want to kiss each other's faces. And that was the magical part for me: because two people who probably didn't know much about their older selves still felt the same as their younger selves. It didn't matter there were many obstacles, those two would always be there for each other.

Girl friendship is such a huge part in Adler's books as well. I'm happy she always writes friendships that are just too hard to break. Lizzie, Cait and Frankie are definitely one of my fave trios in literature. They are great together and support one another and laugh until they fall on the floor.

ps. It was great to see the last couple appear again!!!! They're as cute as ever and I die every time someone says something about them to be honest, I'm such a goner and very very weak whenever it comes to them LOL

Title: Out of Frame
Series: In Focus #3
Author: Megan Erickson
Publisher: InterMix
Publishing: March 15th, 2016
Links: Goodreads | Amazon |
Rating:

Goodreads synopsis:
Perpetually shy, Quinn Mathers is content to remain in the shadow of his brash best friend Jess Hartman. But before their college graduation, he and Jess have planned one last hurrah: a spring break Caribbean cruise.

And it won’t be just any cruise. On board are members of the reality show Trip League, which follows young twenty-somethings on adventures around the world. Since the show’s beginning, Quinn has been fascinated by J. R. Butler, with his amazing body, warm eyes, and killer grin. Unfortunately, he’s straight—or so the world thinks.

At nineteen, J. R. signed a contract to play straight for the show, and there’s no way to get out of it now. Yet with each passing day, Quinn and J. R. find it harder to keep their hands off each other and to keep out of the camera’s frame. But when the lens finally focuses on them, J. R. must decide if he’s willing to risk his career by admitting his bisexuality, and Quinn must determine if he's bold enough to stand in the spotlight with the man of his dreams..

Helloooo new Megan Erickson favorite book. This always tends to happen whenever I read one of her books. But let me tell you why I loved OUT OF FRAME to infinity and beyond:

1. JR Butler. Basically he is my everything. I would do anything for him. I would climb a wall. I would jump from a ship into the ocean. I would drink and dance crazy on top of a table. Anything. He is black and he is bisexual and he is sunshines and stars together. He is an actor in this crazy reality show, but has to act straight because his contract says so. He is so done with it, and craves freedom when the season of his show ends. It was a complete joy to see him be happy and laugh and share those emotions with me. I truly, truly will forever love this guy. *cough* Especially because Megan fancast him as Michael B. Jordan HOLLA!/span>

2. Quinn is a cutie pie. A redhead cutie pie who just wants to have the time of his life. I loved him immediately and felt like I could relate to him. He's shy but when the need to stand up for something, he's the bravest kid in the whole frigging ship. He makes JR laugh and JR thinks he is the cutest thing ever and wants to kiss him like every time.

3. Jess, of course, is so cool I seriously wish she could be my friend. She is a super good best friend for Quinn. Always there for him and ready to punch anyone who dares bother him. They had this great amount of fun whenever they are together and laugh at this simple jokes only them could understand. Of course I totally liked this cute thing she had going on with Casey omg!!

 4. POC in show business. OUT OF FRAME *not pun intended* frames us the perfect picture of today's world in good old Hollywood. JR is black and bi but he can't be black and bi in a TV show. He has to act straight and even though he likes girls also, he explains he doesn't feel good lying to people, even if he did end up with a girl, to lie to the girl and not tell her he likes boys as well. I felt really angry this happens, and I'm more sad to say that this is actually happening right now around us. You can be whoever you want, like every single boy or every single girl you wish, and you shouldn't have to hide it just because there's a stereotype to be fulfilled.

5. Decision making! In the book, Quinn has to make a really hard choice and it's so real how Megan depicts this choice making and how it is clearly not something easy to do. If you are in high school, college, and are afraid what to do next, where to go next, it's normal. I went through that and it's frigging scary but you'll figure it out and it'll be okay. Pros and cons, talk to someone, let them give you advice, it's always nice to have that someone {a best friend, a parent, a teacher, a bf/gf} to support you in some way.

6. I also really, really liked the cast of JR's reality show. They weren't awful and mean. They weren't hating on each other and they were actually there to support their friends if anything happened. I love JR and Levi's friendship - they gave me a smile-for-life face when I read them. The girls were soooo cool and really nice people who just wanted to have fun on a cruise, on spring break.

My first stories written in crayon-scrawl on loose-leaf notebook paper were about my childhood pet — a deaf cat with dandruff. And after covering real-life dramas as a journalist, I decided I liked writing my own endings better and switched to fiction. My romance novels full of humor and heart are a far cry from those early scribblings about my hygiene-deficient pet.

I live in southern Pennsylvania, with my husband, two kids and two cats. I like a good pint of beer, a greasy bacon cheeseburger, homemade mac and cheese, and a great book with a happily ever after. When I’m not tapping away on my laptop, I’m probably listening to the characters in my head who just. Won’t. Shut. Up.

I am represented by Marisa Corvisiero of Corvisiero Literary Agency.
