#GirlsConqueringBooks Event: BLOGGERS TIME!

by - 8:39 AM

HELLO GUYS! This is Day #3 of #GirlsConqueringBooks Valentine's Day event (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧  Today we're giving the floor to bloggers. We asked a few bloggers about their favorite female relationships and friendships in books. We wanted to know why they chose them and why they thought those friendships were some of the best in literature. We also asked them to choose two heroines (either from different books or same ones) that could work really well if they were to collaborate on a Chemistry project - like in school - and the reason they chose those two.

We obviously wanted them to have fun picking and hopefully you guys did, and here are the answers they gave us!

Favorite female friendship or relationship
A girl friendship that I absolutely adore is in The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler. Elyse is battling with so much: losing her voice after a terrifying accident; moving away from Trinidad & Tobago and her family to live in the US with her aunt and cousin; growing apart from her twin sister etc. All the while there are two girls on the sidelines rooting for her (in addition to the rest of this amazing cast). Idk why I'm crying right now, but I think this is a testament to it being one of the greatest female friendships I've read about. I love that even though Vanessa has some history with Christian -- Elyse's love interest -- she isn't malicious towards Elyse and actually helps them a lot along the way. Kirby is a wonderful cousin who is super supportive and patient with Elyse. Honestly, these three girls together are a total powerhouse and a great example of what empowering female relationships should be like.

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?

As for a chemistry project with two heroines, I skimmed my bookshelf real quick and two books stood out for an interesting dynamic: Ismae from His Fair Assassin trilogy and Katsa from the Graceling Realms trilogy. Katsa is pretty explosive, impatient and super duper competitive, whereas Ismae is really quick-witted and the more patient one out of the two. Also, Ismae excels in potions, so she'd take the leader role in this situation and they'd easily beat everyone else in this imaginary Chemistry class regarding time and skill. They'd totally admire each other's skill set and while waiting for others to finish, they'd for sure find much to talk about regarding physical fighting and strategy on Katsa's part and I bet Ismae could teach Katsa a thing or two about lethal potions and antidotes.

Cammie and her best friends Macey, Bex and Liz from the Gallagher Girls series by Ally Carter. They're very supportive and they're almost like sisters because they all know each other that well and would risk their lives for each other. They're all equally strong in different ways and they don't let the preconceptions of the world stop them from being amazing spies. And also Francesca and her girls in Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta. Because they may be different on paper but they have this strong bond that has pushed them together and none of them are afraid to be real with the others.

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
I'd pick Kami Glass from Lynburn Legacy series by Sarah Rees Brennan and Lucy Hamilton from Drake Chronicles by Alyxandra Harvey. They're both quirky but endearing and super protective of their best friends; they would fight the world to keep them safe! They both also have strong spirits and aren't afraid to be themselves or be protected by a boy. So if they did a chemistry project together they would definitely ace it :)

My favorite relationship is Van and Bri from Under the Lights by Dahlia Adler. They're just too sweet for this world, cutie pies BUT WITH A HOT CHILI PEPPER WITHIN.

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
Etta & Sophia from Passenger by Alexandra Bracken. Yeah, they dislike each other, but they're both so fierce and quite interesting together. Most likely the Chemistry project with start to burn. In every way possible. I can't help myself, these two are so lovely.

Hey guys! I’m so so excited to be here to talk about female friendships. Ahh I just love the whole spectrum: frenemies, best friends for life, friends-to-lovers, friends-but-never-lovers, new and fresh friendships, old and cemented friendships… THEY’RE ALL SO GREAT. Sometimes I just want to hop into books and try to become friends with all these characters because you just want in on that feeling, y’know? (Or maybe it’s because I don’t have many friends in real life lol.

Favorite female friendship/relationship
When asked to choose which friendship is my favorite in literature, I kind of cried because I’M SO BAD AT CHOOSING THINGS. Seriously, me + decision-making = not good scenario. But after much, much thinking and scouring my Goodreads list, I have chosen one! I’m actually really satisfied with the one I finally picked, because the whole book was just awesome: Agnieszka and Kasia from Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I really can’t stress how much I love this book! It’s the type of fantasy that just weaves a spell on you to become utterly enchanted with it. Or, at least that was my experience. Agnieszka and Kasia are both of similar age, and come from the same village. Their interactions are just phenomenal, and their friendship just progresses so much throughout the book. At first they were the kind of supportive friends - the ones that are together all the time, but they they’re going to have to let go of sooner or later (which involves the story). Then, we get into the magical bits and they have a confrontation of the envy that each girl experienced with the other. I just love how it shows both the good and bad sides of each perspective and ultimately develops their relationship. Both girls experience growth, and it’s just absolutely lovely to read about. My favorite friendships are the dynamic friendships, because that way you can never get bored.

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
Okay so if I had to choose two characters to complete a chemistry project, I would grab Hermione from Harry Potter and Annabeth from Percy Jackson. First, it would be because my two childhood heroines would be working together and tears of joy would be streaming down my cheeks. And second, THEY WOULD TOTALLY SLAY THAT CHEMISTRY PROJECT. When I’m in a group project, I’m all about the grade. If I have to carry other people because of it, I WILL CARRY. Just give me that A. And I feel like these girls would have the same mentalities. Annabeth is such a strategizer, and I could totally see her immediately planning out the steps on how to carry out the project. I mean, lab procedures? Girl’s got that in the ballpark. Materials list? Already there. She would have a plan for everything! Who needs research when you have Hermoine’s smarts to figure everything out? She would complement Annabeth’s strategizing well with the actual execution of the project, backed up by solid, concrete evidence. You got the plan, now you gotta take the action. As my class would say, they would make the “dream team.” We got two determined, intelligent, and fierce girls working on a chemistry project - seems like the path to success.

Yay for girl friendships! I could always use more of these in my books. Too many times have I seen girls pitted against other girls and I’m like “NOOOO WE HAVE TO STICK TOGETHER.” How else are we going to be able to go against the patriarchy that still dominates many societies today? WE NEED TO STAND BY EACH OTHER. *war cry* I’m so happy to be able to participate in #GirlsConqueringBooks, and conquer we shall. Happy reading!

Favorite female friendship/relationship
My favorite female friendship has to be Kasia and Agnieska’s bond in Naomi Novik’s UPROOTED. It was just…perfect. And so believable. They harbored resentments and misunderstandings. But they deeply cared for one another. I love how Agnieska’s growth came from her desire to save her friend. And I love how Kasia really holds her own and becomes this Golden Warrior Queen. There was no sidekick relationship here. This was a friendship of equals.

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
I’d love to see Scarlett O’Hara (Gone With The Wind) and Zuzana (Daughter of Smoke and Bone) work on a chemistry project together. Sassy/Ruthless Southern Belle meets Sassy/Ruthless Living Doll. They’d either demolish one another or wield their charisma into taking their HS chem project to world domination levels.

I’ve loved so many girls’ friendship in YA, but Far From You particularly carved a place in my heart. It follows the story of Sophie and Mina, who are the best of friends, who might or might not be in love with one another.

I supposed this is why I love them so much. They have their own language, they can only understand. Though sometimes, they don’t have an easy relationship, but it is the kind of bond they protect fiercely. Their devotion surpasses a normal friendship tier, but that doesn’t cancelled the vital foundation of their relationship, friends. Throughout the novel, the readers would see how they helped each other progressed. Their love centers on wanting each other to do best and be healthy. This story is not only for conquering girls and friendships. It is for LGBTQIA kids as well, who once in a while needed to have their feelings justified.

Upon reading The Wrath and the Dawn and An Ember in the Ashes, I instantly knew I got to have a crossover someday. Laia and Shahrzad are two of my favorite fantasy girls. Despite their contradicting personalities and varying circumstances, I think they would get along beautifully. If put together in one room, will they discuss their half-wit significant others? Perhaps, but the world is a broad space and men are not the only adequate topics!

Shahrzad and Laia came from an environment that aren’t very kind to their sex. They constantly have to fight scraps to reinstate their position, but that never means they are completely powerless. These two characters have shown women do weave a tremendous amount of tenacity. We are capable of greatness and that greatness comes in different forms. Every so often, we could hear the ferocious roar of the tigress, but typically she would walk so softly her foe wouldn’t see their fate coming. I personally think Sabaa Tahir and Renee Ahdieh perfectly captured that essence.

With that, I could see Laia teaching Shahrzad the fine arts of making a jam. While, Shazi on the other hand would definitely educate Laia a thing or two about “how to jab men who forgets their place in this world.” Fantastic. I want twenty.

I have so many! But I think I'll chose Vida and Ruby from The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken. I LOVE THEM <333

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
For a Chemistry project, I think Gia from THE FILL-IN BOYFRIEND by Kasie West and Emily from SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE by Morgan Matson would be an interesting pair. Gia is the outgoing popular girl while Emily is... basically the complete opposite. These two characters also go through an extensive amount of character development so I think they'd be able to resonate with one another. They're both fairly open minded so I think they'd be able to work things out. :)

Favorite female friendship/relationship
I love Abby and Rachel (from Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry) because they are from very different worlds and backgrounds but Rachel never once judged Abby for it and Abby trusted Rachel enough to give her her friendship and above all always looked to take care of her.

Also, I love Robyn and Dixie (from Neon Dreams series by Caisey Quinn) because their friendship is really strong, even when Robyn broke up with Dixie's brother (which would be a deal breaker) they both moved past that and were always there for each other when they needed each other.

*So Maf picked two heroines who she thought would be great to see together.
For two female characters who I would like to see together: Nora Sutherlin (The Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz) and Anastasia Steele (Fifty Shades of Gray by E.L. James). Ana leaving Christian because Nora made her realise she deserves better.

Favorite female friendship/relationship
Cinder x Iko from The Lunar Chronicles. I felt like they were each other's best (and only) friend at the beginning of the series and all they're scenes together made me smile so much. Every friendship needs a person in charge of nudging the other in the ribs to point out the cute guy in close proximity. THIS IS SO IKO. Then there's the rational friend who won't leave you behind in tough situations. I love how Cinder does what she does in the first book after something happens to Iko. And how ridiculous Iko can be but you just know that Cinder (and yourself, admit it) finds it amusing to no end

If you could pick two heroines to collaborate together in a Chemistry project, who would you choose?
Aria (Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi) x Karou (Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor). I totally think these two would mesh well. It was only until I had to think of my answer for this question that I realize how similar these two great heroines actually are. Both are independent and strong-willed. I feel like they could relate to the other seeing as they both have no siblings and often looked up to one parental figure. Both are artistic in different ways. Aria enjoys singing while Karou prefers drawing. Aria could tell her stories about the different virtual realms she's been to using her 'Smarteye' and Karou could tell her about all the places she's been, running errands for Brimstone. Now I'm imagining a cross-over where one of Karou's errands brings her to Aria xD
