The Book Voyagers

Since 2015 is almost over ( I KNOW I CANT BELIEVE IT?), Sil and I have been talking to some debut authors as a way to celebrate the new years for NEW beginnings and of course new books :)

Since all these authors are debuting in 2016 it seems so fitting to ask them about 2016 as they are embarking on a totally different new adventure and getting their perspective is not only amazing but also fun. We decided to construct some cute holiday cards about their new year resolutions and we also asked which two books they are MOST excited for.

2016 is all about new beginnings (as any year is!) so here is to the new year! Happy Holidays everyone!<3

From: Heidi Heilig, author of The Girl From Everywhere

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Heidi: OF FIRE AND STARS by Audrey Coulthurst and THE BLOOD ROSE REBELLION by Rosalyn Eves (which comes out early in 2017 but I plan to get an ARC come hell or high water).

From: Erin Summerill, author of Ever the Hunted

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Erin: THE READER by Traci Chee and BURNING GLASS by Kathryn Purdie

From: Brittany Cavallaro, author of A Study in Charlotte

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Brittany: THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig and SCARLETT EPSTEIN HATES IT HERE by Anna Breslaw.

From Evelyn Skye, author of The Crown's Game

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Evelyn: THE YEAR WE FELL APART by Emily Martin and THE WINNER'S KISS by Marie Rutkoski.

From Nicole Castroman, author of Blackhearts

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Nicole: As far as my top 2 reads for 2016? That's so hard! I've had the privilege of already reading some amazing 2016 debuts. I haven't read all of them, so I don't want to leave anyone out, but seriously, there is something for everyone, whether it be contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi or historical. 2016 is going to be a fantastic year for debuts. If it's a NON debut book I'm most looking forward to, I have a list of those. At the top of that list are THE WINNER'S KISS, THE SKYLIGHTER, THE BEAUTY OF DARKNESS, THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER...I could go on and on, but you only asked for 2. Sorry. ;)

From Melissa Gorzelanczyk, author of Arrows

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Melissa: I've read so many amazing 2016 debuts that I'm choosing two I haven't read yet, but am really excited about: SEVEN WAYS WE LIE by Riley Redgate and BOOKISHLY EVER AFTER by Isabel Bandeira.

From Sarah Glenn Marsh, author of Fear the Drowning Deep

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?

Sarah:  Two books I'm excited to read...I'll choose January books, because there's too much to pick from this coming year otherwise: FIRSTS by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn and UNDERWATER by Marisa Reichardt :)

From: Tara Sim, author of Timekeeper

TBV: Two books you're excited to read in 2016?
Tara: And here are two 2016 books I'm especially excited for (that I've already read, but still excited to see them on the shelves): THE ABYSS SURROUNDS US by Emily Skrutskie and THE READER by Traci Chee

We're celebrating the release of With Every Breath by Lia Riley!

Title: With Every Breath (A Wanderlust novel)
Author: Lia Riley
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Release date: December 29, 2015
Publisher: Forever Grand Central
Links: Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes and Noble | iBooks | Kobo | Google Play

BREATHE DEEP . . . AND JUMP IN
At the ends of the earth, Patagonia is a land where ambition trumps reason and the savage summit of La Aguja lures the most determined climbers. It's also the last spot a "play-it-safe girl" like Auden Woods expects to find herself. But she'll lace up her brand-new hiking boots and do whatever it takes to secure a dream job at an adventure magazine . . . even if it kills her. And it just might. When disaster strikes, her only chance at survival comes in the form of the surliest, sexiest mountaineer ever to come out of Scotland.

After a climbing accident cost him his brother, professional mountaineer Rhys MacAskill is at the end of his rope. Redemption is not in his future. That is, until a terrifying storm blows a budding journalist into his tent and it's up to him to make sure they both survive until morning. Despite the demons weighing on him, Rhys can't resist the temptation of the charming American and one wild night just isn't enough.

Auden and Rhys soon learn there are no shortcuts as they navigate their way between life, death, and atonement, and discover something they never expected- love. "Riley writes a captivating story from beginning to breathtaking end." - Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Inside Out

- Silvana's review -
I kid you not - I totally finished this book in one go. I couldn't stop myself, I didn't want to stop myself. I was in the mood for a nice NA, sexy and cute and Lia Riley delivered on a silver platter. She took out the big guns and combined the best of both worlds - the adventure, heart-in-the-throat and the swoony, cute as a cupcake times.

Rhys and Auden were so fun to meet and see interact in the circumstances they were in. For me, Auden was strong to take that step and go onto an adventure to the other part of the world to get the job. I was in awed and wanted to draw from her the passion and how she clearly saw her goals in mind. I would be scared as hell to drop in the middle of the forests and I'd probably die some time later. But Auden *wink wink* suddenly meets a climber who so happens to save her from this storm that is happening right that moment. Rhys is moody and grumpy and he probably was a teddy bear in his past life. Rhys, for me, I wanted to know more. More, more, more. He had his demons and yet again I'm bowing down to Auden to have stayed there (I mean sometimes she didn't have a choice because you know "end of the world happening outside" kind of situations) but she stayed and she wanted also to know more.

They had this insta-lust kind of thing to be honest. If you don't like that, you probably would feel a bit "eh" but I promise the after is so much better. There's funny moments between them. SO MANY. It's so good to see their banter and how clearly they like each other. Also who doesn't like some sexy times in the woods? These two deliver in spades in concern with this.

So With Every Breath got you covered - you want romance? You want a journey to discovering your truths? You want an adventure, a waderlust book about a Scot wanting to free solo climb La Aguja because of his past? And the girl who wants to get the job because she wants to finally have something for herself? Pick up With Every Breath today.

EXCERPT
I clear my throat and project my voice into a shouty rasp. “Sorry. I don’t mean to bother you, but—”

“What do you want?” A guy—not a very happy one by the sound of it—growls from inside.

“Sorry?” I bend closer to the nylon to hear above the deluge.

“What. Do. You. Want?”

My unwilling savior has a testy accent and a worse attitude. British maybe? No one does disdain like the English. Under normal circumstances, I’d swoon. I’m such a sucker for Mr. Darcy fantasies, but this isn’t Pemberley. It’s the Patagonian wilderness.

I lurch backward and trip over a tent peg. The flashlight slips from my grasp and hits the ground, shining on a coiled rope topped by a helmet. A mountaineer. Wonderful. He’s not exactly going to roll out the welcome mat for my inept ass, and I’m the type of girl who hates asking for help carrying groceries to the car. But what’s the alternative? Hypothermic death in a bog?

The tent unzips. My thoughts are jumbled, but there’s enough common sense left remaining to not fall to my knees and praise Jesus, Mary, and all the angels.

The diffuse light reveals the guy inside rising to his knees. Too dark to make out a face, especially when his headlamp burns my retinas. He seems very big, very shirtless, and very alone.

My nails cut into my palms, but no feeling remains in my hands. This damsel-in-distress business sucks. “My tent, see. It’s short a pole, and I can’t set it up. Can I…? Can I…?” Out with it, like ripping off a bandage. Strange my mouth can be so dry when the rest of me is drenched. I have to get inside that tent. “May I come in? Please. I don’t know what else to do.” I have nothing left to say. My social skills toolbox is empty.

A few seconds tick by. “Can’t leave you out there.” He sounds disappointed by the fact. “Come in, then, but those muddy boots stay in the vestibule.”

I step forward unsteadily, half wishing I could see him better, get a good look at the situation, and half not caring. At least I’m going to have shelter, and surviving is worth dealing with the uncomfortable situation. As I bend to unlace my boots, the glow from his headlamp reveals carved abs and low-slung pants barely hanging on to narrow hips. My throat constricts. Looks like tonight will be spent between a rock and a hard place.

Lia Riley writes offbeat New Adult and Contemporary Adult romance. After studying at the University of Montana-Missoula, she scoured the world armed only with a backpack, overconfidence and a terrible sense of direction. She counts shooting vodka with a Ukranian mechanic in Antarctica, sipping yerba mate with gauchos in Chile and swilling XXXX with stationhands in Outback Australia among her accomplishments.

A British literature fanatic at heart, Lia considers Mr. Darcy and Edward Rochester as her fictional boyfriends. Her very patient husband doesn't mind. Much. When not torturing heroes (because c'mon, who doesn't love a good tortured hero?), Lia herds unruly chickens, camps, beach combs, daydreams about future books, wades through a mile-high TBR pile and schemes yet another trip. Right now, Icelandic hot springs and Scottish castles sound mighty fine.

She and her family live mostly in Northern California.

LETS KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A BRAND NEW INTERVIEW.

If it's not obvious, diverse books are our #1 priority here at TBV so we decided to interview the lovely, Roshani Chokshi. Her book, The Star-Touched Queen, is influenced by Indian mythology and has such an intriguing premise, we were dying to know more. There also might be a small snippet at the bottom? hmmm :)

TBV:  To start off, can you tell us what the Star - Touched Queen is about for those who don’t know?
Roshani: Unofficially, The Star-Touched Queen is about constellations, beautiful monsters, obscure fates and all the ways we define ourselves. Officially, here’s the synopsis!

Cursed with a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, sixteen-year-old Maya has only earned the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her world is upheaved when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. But when her wedding takes a fatal turn, Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Yet neither roles are what she expected. As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds friendship and warmth.

But Akaran has its own secrets - thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Beneath Akaran's magic, Maya begins to suspect her life is in danger. When she ignores Amar's plea for patience, her discoveries put more than new love at risk - it threatens the balance of all realms, human and Otherworldly.

Now, Maya must confront a secret that spans reincarnated lives and fight her way through the dangerous underbelly of the Otherworld if she wants to protect the people she loves.

THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN is a lush, beautifully written and vividly imagined fantasy inspired by Indian mythology.

TBV: I know you're very influenced by Indian mythology, which story resonated with you the
most? It must of been so exciting to add some stories into your book!<3
Roshani: The story that had the most influence on me was the tale of Savitri and Satyavan, which originally appeared in the Mahabharata. What I loved about the myth was Savitri’s agency. She was the rescuer. She entered a relationship of love knowing the consequences. She reinterpreted her husband’s fate against all odds and tricked Death himself! It’s also a very personal story to me. When my family moved, we stayed with my aunt and uncle. They had a beautiful illustrated version of the Savitri and Satyavan tale, and my aunt would read it to me thousands of times.

TBV: How did you get the inspiration of writing this book? Did you ever give up during the process of writing it all down?
Roshani: I was inspired to write The Star-Touched Queen because of my family life. I’m Indian and Filipina, and devouring fairytales and folklore from around the world helped me navigate belonging to two heritages. So many of the stories I loved shared characteristics that I wanted to write something that would be familiar to fairytale fans and also new because the story drew on different cultural traditions. I also felt an obligation to write this for my younger self. Growing up as a fantasy reader, I never saw people like me represented in those stories. I wanted to change that.

There were times when I felt discouraged from writing The Star-Touched Queen. I felt like no one would even want to read this because it was too unfamiliar or they just had no interest. But so far I've been proven wrong in the best way possible. :)

TBV: Who was your favorite character to write?
Roshani: My FAVORITE character to write was Kamala, the flesh-eating demon horse. She’s just the absolute best. She’s hilarious. Her moral compass skips from ruthless to terrifying. And yet she’s capable of fierce affection. I like writing lovable monsters.

TBV: Which part are you most excited for readers to see about your book?
Roshani: I’m really excited for readers to (hopefully) immerse themselves in the world building. The setting really informs the emotional notes of The Star-Touched Queen, and so I hope that readers find themselves transported.

TBV:  We are so excited for your book! Is it possible if you can give us maybe a one - liner or an excerpt for us? :) (If you can’t answer don’t worry!)

Roshani: "The Night Bazaar had ensnared me. I could smell its perfume on my skin — of stories and secrets, flashing teeth and slow smiles. In the arms of this land, I was no stronger than a calf in a lion’s jaws. But I liked it. Even though I couldn’t admit it aloud, even though I comforted myself that I had no choice but to go with him, the truth was that I wanted this. I yearned to draw breath beneath a split-sky leaking with magic. And not just live within one of the other realms’ strange kingdoms, but rule it. "

A great thanks to Roshani for taking the time out of her day to let us interview her!<3 It was a BLAST.
