The Book Voyagers

This is a semi-(hopefully)complete guide of the How To's and How Not To's of editing in Tumblr. Especially when the book has characters of color.

Let's speak about the problem first: You go on book Tumblr (meaning the fandom who likes book and does edits of their fave books and takes pictures of their books and reviews and more). Book Tumblr is a bit white you see. You see a lot of white models and white books. It's a fact. But when you suddenly find yourself before an edit of a book that you know it has a person of color as the main character but this edit doesn't show this.

Why? Because they've been whitewashed. You can whitewash in various ways. This is a guide of how to do it (and avoid doing it hopefully in the future):

This is what you can call "the grey aesthetic edit." This is a big trend on Tumblr. But as you can see ~ it clearly whitewashes this model's skin. IT. LOOKS. WHITE. Her skin is dark-brown. First, it's not pretty. This theme Tumblr has going on with the grey thing is horrible, sorry not sorry. I'm just telling it how it is. You can find 10823738733 book edits with this theme and I'm so tired of seeing this because it's just disrespectful.

Another thing going on is the pastel aesthetic. It practically does the same as the grey aesthetic thing, it whitewashes a person's skin just to fit the pastel aesthetic they want to achieve. I want to tell them all a secret and that is: You can achieve that pastel theme you so want without whitewashing someone's skin. It can happen. I assure you this.

I just saw an edit for a book I loved and the main character has brown skin but this edit what it does it makes the model LOOK WHITE. If I didn't know better I would say the model is white. But because I have seen this picture on Pinterest I know the person in the picture has brown skin. Yet if I didn't know this, I wouldn't have known and say this person is white ~ and she isn't.

The next one is the black/white square in a picspam. This is so annoying but I have seen it many times in Tumblr *sighs* Someone does a picspam* of a book they love, they put everything so spot on and even include the characters. And when they include the POC.... they put them with the black/white theme. The only one with the b/w is the POC in this picspam of colors. It's shitty as heck. Don't do it. You're whitewashing again!

*Example of picspams if you don't know what they are:

And the worst of the worst: Fancasting someone light-skinned or white when they have dark-brown skin or that are black.... Just why? These are some of the book characters I see more in Tumblr that get whitewash in terms of people put a light-skinned model or a white one.

(My fancast for Laia of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES)
(My fancast for Ari of ARI AND DANTE)

Other characters that are not white but get fancasted as white:
  • June Iparis (Legend trilogy)
  • Day (Legend trilogy)
  • Leo Valdez (Heroes of Olympus)
  • Adelina Amouteru (The Young Elites)
  • Zoe Nightshade (Percy Jackson series)
  • Piper McLean (HoO)
  • and more......
In the show business world, light-skinned celebrities are more popular than dark-skinned ones. That's why when you search for fancasts you almost always find the light-skinned ones on the top because they are the more popular ones. So please choose models with brown skin or dark-brown skin or black model when it's canon in text, don't just choose whoever you want just because the one you want has the same characteristics but not the same ethnicity.

Interchanging cultures. This is another way to whitewash characters of color. Mainly because you're interchanging their cultures with another ones ~and they aren't the same. This is also, sadly, very common in the community. (Can also be seen in the twitter book community, in the form of the book aesthetics). I understand that it's the way "you see the character when you read the book." But I'm sorry, nope. If the book explicitly says the ethnicity of the character, you respect that. It's canon.

What I see the most is interchanging East-Asian models/actors in edits. Chinese is not the same as Korean is not the same as Japanese is not the same as Mongolian is not the same as Taiwanese. You see a lot of fancasts with Korean actos/models in edits for books that have Japanese characters or Chinese characters? I know it's easier somehow but it's not right.

I know it's hard to find fancasts just the same as the book describes them. But you might find someone as close to the description if you don't find them fully. "I couldn't find pictures" is not acceptable because there are many of them out there. Sue from daisycalloway @ Tumblr did a great post with links where you can find models of color. I am also adding these other sites you can find POC to fancast in your edits:

  • modelsoftherpingworld
  • mexican-models
  • fashionmediaph
  • (for plus-sized models) aboutthecurvylife
  • pmap
  • modamexblog
  • onlymodelsofcolour
  • (for transgender models) slaymodels

Here you have 10+ links to find the perfect fancast for your book edit. So please don't interchange and be respectful. Don't whitewash. Don't erase POC from books when you're doing edits. We get the rep in books but when we look at Tumblr it's like it was never there in the first place.

Will leave Mana's fabulous threads here so you all can follow her and praise her because she's always so vocal about this and she's always right tbh
i really wish people who design/edit actually took the time and patience as it does for authors (who genuinely try to write diversely)

Title: Infini
Series: Aerial Ethereal #2
Author: Krista and Becca Ritchie

Book summary:
Some love is infinite
"Don’t have a best friend that’s a girl" — this was the advice from my older cousin. I didn’t take it. Because he followed with, "friends don’t f*ck friends. And you’ll want to f*ck her."
It was terrible advice.
My cousin should’ve told me that being best friends with Baylee Wright — since she was twelve — would be the best and worst decision of my life.
He should have told me to protect her from what was coming.
He should have told me that when a darkness crawled towards us, there’d be no safety net.
Now I’ve signed back on to the same Vegas acrobatic show as Baylee, working together for the first time in years. And she tells me that she’s having trouble in a certain “area” of her life — because of our past.
“You can help me fix it,” she says.
And then she hands me a list.

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N

Trigger warnings in the book: Bulimia, depression, kleptomania, and abuse. It is recommended for 18+ readers because there are adult language and graphic scenes.

It's good to be back because truly this is one of my favorite New Adult series. The times I have reread Amour Amour are too many to count and I just love to go back to those times and read about one of my favorite families, the Kotovas. We had Nik and KBR showed us a bit of his family in the previous book. But now we have Luka and a lot more of Kotovas (I'm literally so happy we saw so many of the Kotovas and the family, like oh my god I want to be in these shows).

Infini is the new show in this book. Luka finds out he has been signed to Infini, one show he has been before, in New York. But because of something that happens, he had to leave not only his job but also his best friend, Baylee Wright.

What can I say? My name is Luka Kotova. I'm an irresponsible fuck-up. Thanks for your time. Now let me be.

This book definitely has childhood friends trope. It's so cute, I love this trope so much because we clearly see the characters know each other a lot more than the other tropes. They know their likes and their dislikes and their past and the things they have faced throughout all this time. We see this in Luka and Baylee and we do get some scenes when they were only kids. We also get that relationship between Baylee and some of the Kotovas. She has known them for so long and has shared all her life with them, so it's pretty great to see how they interact (outside of Luka).

Baylee is the main character, side by side with Luka. She's biracial ~ Jamaican-American. Baylee is THE BEST EVER. #pleaseprotecther. She's a juggler in Infini and so so amazing. She inspires me so much and I wish one day I have the strenght she shows (or I hope I already have it). We hadn't met Baylee until this book in comparison with Luka that we did meet with in Amour Amour. It was so great to meet her for the first time because I already loved her because of all the promo and anticipation for this book. She is definitely someone I will always remember and will be sure to come back once again and many time more (!!) to this world.

KBR are my all-time favorite forever. They outdone themselves with each book they publish. It's just incredible. What I did love a lot is that this book is in dual POV, which if I remember correctly Amour Amour isn't. So we get both perspectives in everything and how each of them feels, together and alone time. It's A+ I tell you all.

I fucking love her— and that means nothing to everyone but me.

Let's not forget our favorite characters from the book before that we meet again?!!?! My ultimate fave appears again (of course): TIMO KOTOVA. And his very sweet and cute boyfriend (also a pessimist) John Ruiz. We get more story on them too. But I believe we totally need a book about them because gosh so many things??? *screams in space* There is also Nik and Thora that I also love love love so much and  I'm so happy to see them again and read a bit about them and where they are. // And Katya! And Dimitri! And Camila! And omg please give me all the books about them and maybe about some more Kotovas? We need more just saying.

This book definitely covers more (in time) and it has that slow-burn romance we all need in our lives. Baylee and Luka's romance starts shaky from where they left off, there is that sort-of forbidden romance vibe in it. But we can clearly see the love and the nostalgia and the knowledge of themselves and their bodies when they are together. This relationship is so pure and precious and you will love them so quickly.

Title: 27 Hours
Series: The Nightside Saga #1
Author: Tristina Wright
Release date: October 3rd, 2017

Book description:

Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.
But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.
Nyx Llorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with Dahlia, her best friend. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother's shadow, and to unlearn Epsilon's darkest secret.
They’ll both have to commit treason to find the truth.
During one twenty-seven-hour night, if they can’t stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, the things they wish for will never come true, and the things they fear will be all that’s left.

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo

Tristina Wright is a blue-haired bisexual with anxiety and opinions. She’s also possibly a mermaid, but no one can get confirmation. She fell in love with science fiction and fantasy at a young age and frequently got caught writing in class instead of paying attention. She enjoys worlds with monsters and kissing and monsters kissing. She married a nerd who can build computers and make the sun shine with his smile. Most days, she can be found drinking coffee from her favorite chipped mug and making up more stories for her wombfruit, who keep life exciting and unpredictable. Still trying to figure out the mermaid thing.

Hi voyagers! It's night for me but it might be morning for you so all the good luck to a new day ~ and if you're ready to go to bed ~ good night my fellow book people! But DON'T GO JUST YET. You /have/ to do this first. Wanna know what is it? *evil laugh* Today on the blog I have a very special someone, you might know him. He's very charming on Twitter but also really honest.

*drumroll*

Please welcome BroodingYAHero aka Broody. And also welcome to lovely Carrie Ann, author of the upcoming book about Broody and the person behind the screen! I literally love this account so much, it's so genius and always speaks the truth. Carrie Ann is fabulous, and I am super happy about the book deal because it's going to be SO FUN.

So the thing about this post. I pitched some ideas to Carrie Ann and this one fit perfectly and we believe it would be so much fun and really interesting to see the answers and outcome. // Basically it's a quiz that has the same format of some quizzes that you might find in teen magazines. Or in magazines overall. The big question: WHAT'S YOUR IDEAL FIRST DATE WITH BROODY? And from there you will choose your answers and depending on the answer, you'll get another question and next and next, until at one point, you'll get a "Ending. See answer #" and you'll go to the number of the answer and you will know your ideal first date with one handsome Broody.

Ready?
ANSWERS:
♡ Ending #1:
You stay asleep/in a coma, and I solve the plot and save the world!

♡ Ending #2:
Let's have a masquerade ball, where I'll be certain not to recognize you due to your tiny elaborate mask.

♡ Ending #3:
No date for you. You seem to have reasonable, healthy expectations for a relationship, and I'm allergic to that.

♡ Ending #4:
Time for me to put you in a dangerous situation then save you!

♡ Ending #5:
Hmmm... why don't we have a lovely rooftop chat... about me, all my feelings, and my tragic backstory. And by chat, I mean, me whine.

♡ Ending #6:
I think the most romantic thing for me to do now is to skip the date and threaten every male who dares speak to you.

♡ Ending #7:
Let's sit some place quiet, and just... peer into each other's eyes. For a long, unblinking, adjective-filled hour.

♡ Ending #8:
I'll give you (and the reader) a tour of this new location you've found yourself in. Not only will you fall in love with me, all that boring world building will be taken care of by the end of the tour.

Title: On Broken Wings
Series: Wild Aces #3
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Publisher: Penguin/Berkley
Release date: January 3, 2017

Add on Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Kobo

Synopsis

A year after losing her husband, Joker, the squadron commander of the Wild Aces, Dani Peterson gets an offer from his best friend, Alex “Easy” Rogers, to help fix up her house. Dani accepts, and their friendship grows—along with an undeniable attraction.

Racked by guilt for loving his best friend’s widow, Easy’s caught between what he wants and can’t have. Until one night everything changes, and the woman who’s always held his heart ends up in his arms. Yet as Easy leaves for his next deployment, he and Dani are torn between their feelings and their loyalty to Joker’s memory.

But when Dani discovers something that sends them both into a spin, the conflicted lovers must overcome the past to navigate a future together…

Review

On Broken Wings is the sweetest ending to the Wild Aces series. We have Easy and Dani as main characters and we have been knowing them so much more throughout every single book since the start. We knew Dani lost her husband, Joker, in book #1 and we have watched her grow and a year after the death of her husband is where On Broken Wings start.

In the other hand, Easy has been in love with Dani since the first moment he saw her. Meaning he has been in love with his captain's wife since the very beginning. He has kept it a secret, of course. He has mourned Joker, he has tried to keep his feelings away when it comes to Dani, time and time again. Though they have become best friends through time.

Definitely On Broken Wings was one of my most anticipated romance books to come out! Easy and Dani's story has been building up since book #1 and it has been bittersweet and painful but this book is surely a perfect way to the end this lovely series I will miss so much.

Though the trope is one I don't enjoy a lot, I truly enjoyed these two characters and how the story developed. Easy really loves Dani, like there is no confusion or anything, you know from the start Easy loves Dani completely, fully, with out any boundaries. Easy is so cute and he blushes so easily when it comes to Dani. She doesn't realize at first so they do all of these things like cuddling together and holding hands (to be honest, they are so frigging cute when they do that). They are there to support each other 1000% that's the truth.

It was also really great to see our fave couples/characters from past books again. Jordan, Noah, Thor and Becca are all there and cuter than ever. They show you what their lives are like since their book and it's so good and nostalgic and will make you want to reread their books again, I assure you this lol. Can't wait for more Chanel Cleeton books to come out! I'm here for the long haul.

Title: Sabriya: Damascus Bitter Sweet
Author: Ulfat Idilbi
Publisher: Quartet Books

Add on Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo

Synopsis

Sabriya portrays life in Damascus in the 1920's. Central to the story is Sabriya's journey to self-knowledge, intertwined with the rise and eclipse of national and feminist awareness during her painful life. The national revolt is crushed by superior foreign power and Sabriya's personal emancipation is stifled by the traditional values of a patriarchal society.

Written from the point of view of a young girl passionately committed to the nationalist cause but unable, because of her sex, to take an active part, it seethes with the frustrated energy of the reluctant bystander and vividly expresses the terror of civilians living in a city rocked nightly by explosions.

Review

You ever start a book and know after a few pages that you're probably going to be a bit more wiser after you finish? This is that kind of book. It makes you reflect on the life you live and what other people have gone through to get you the freedoms you have. I had to look up the author's background story to know how much of this book was personal account.

Sabriya has committed suicide and left a journal of her life for her 15 year old niece. In this journal she narrates the Syrian revolution against the French occupation in the 1920's. She narrates the domestic and emotional abuse her family has put her through, the sexism and dichotomy of a society that confines women between the 4 walls of their houses, she also speaks of lost love and death and depression.

This book was so raw and hit on so many topics. If you're looking for an intersectional feminist story that depicts the lives of Syrian women in a historical period, then I would highly recommend you read this. One of the things that hit me the most is realizing that the majority of atoricities committed against the Syrians in this narration is not that far off from what's happening in Syria nowadays. It was also very enlightening and discusses a historical event I have not read about before. You get to see the effect of colonization on civilians, you witness familial clashes on political views, and where nationalism really comes from.

The writing was so beautiful. You can genuinely feel when the Sabriya was at her happiest, and how events that she goes through change her in the way she writes, you can tell when she starts going mad, when she becomes depressed, you can foresee the suicide halfway through the book. It is somehow always in the back of my mind that this novel was written in the 80's about an earlier period all together. The author has herself had to leave school and was forced to be married at the age of 17 and discharge from her education. This made reading these personal entries even more heartbreaking because you can tell they come from personal experience.

One aspect that I liked was the restraint on romance. Adil and Sabriya did not have the luxury of meeting and talking every day and had to be grateful for the 5 minutes he saw her every morning when he delivered bread at their door. Years later, they developed to 30 minutes every week in a hidden garden. I felt like I saw the struggle of what it's like not to be free to do what one wishes.

I'm going to put some of my favorite quotes that discuss important issues:
"I am helpless, helpless. There are generations behind the way I have been brought up. Over the ages religion, customs, and tradition have imposed taboos with roots so strong in our hearts that the are venerated. "
"It was totally unacceptable for a young veiled girl to walk out with young men even when they were close relations. I felt a sense of oppression. I had been defeated. This humiliation made me introspective even at that tender age."
"I long for more freedom, for honor, and for a better life. We live in our own country, oppressed and despised."
"After this calamity Damascus became like a humble dove that fold its wings over a fracture and remains silent in steadfast defiance. Damascus, a smile of sorrow, harboring tragedy. The secret of your eternal survival, dear Damascus, is that silence in the face of disaster. You have suffered so much. Through raids and plunder, you remain forever." this quote in particular is so relevant to nowadays.
"Why is it that the people of my country demand freedom and at the same time cannot grant it to each other? Half the nation was shackled in chains created by men. That is a wrong we refuse to acknowledge." (THIS QUOTE!!! this right here is what it was like being a woman in the Arab world in the 20th century at the peak of nationalism. Men demanded freedom from colonialists but took it away from women in the same way.)
"Why aren't women taking part in the demonstration? Don't women have the right to defend their country? How long will half the nation remain paralyzed?"
Overall, this is an important read, with a lot to learn from. I highly recommend people to read it.
