The Book Voyagers

Hey, lovely people! The Book Voyagers brings you a very special cover reveal today. And it's none other than Rebekah Weatherspoon's SANCTUARY, the most anticipated sequel for HAVEN in the Beards & Bondage series. It's coming soon but I've seen so many people in my Twitter account get excited about this series and what's coming next. Especially right after finishing Haven, people are just waiting for more from this world. Just like me.

It's very special to me as well because this is my very first *exclusive* cover reveal and this feels so amazing, great, wonderful *every single adjetive that fits*? Thank you Rebekah, and truly I adore you and everything you write and everything about you and I hope one day we get to meet and hang out at The Ripped Bodice between pages of romance books and epic love stories.

We have Rebekah Weatherspoon in the blog today to share with us a little bit about what SANCTUARY holds between front cover and back cover. Maybe some secrets might escape and we might know a bit more about this lovely series.

Hey, Party people! Okay, so the blurb for SANCTUARY is still a little sketchy. What can I say, I like to live life dangerously and last minute, but here are some stats that should help get you pumped for the next installment of the Beards & Bondage series.

What you're getting: A pseudo-witness protection, strangers to enemies to lovers, secret boyfriend who also happens to be the femdom heroine's best friend's brother, small town romance.

The Lucky Couple: Liz Lewis and Silas McInroy

Liz: A gorgeous, Black, plus-size corporate litigator (please see the amazing Precious Lee for inspiration)

If you've read HAVEN, you'll know Liz as Claudia's no nonsense best friend. If you haven't read HAVEN, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Silas: A super buff produce farmer, who understands that he has mild autism that has gone undiagnosed by a professional. Many adult POC have had to unfortunately have self-diagnose a whole range of things. (see drool worthy Jason Momoa for inspiration)

Will there be a beard and some bondage? A beard, yes. And bondage, a little bit yes. The BDSM acronym covers a wide range of ground. This story will focus more on willful submission during sexual acts between consenting adults, but someone is definitely getting tied up. (Spoiler: it's Silas)

Will there be murderrrr? Yes. There will be a murder. Murder via stiletto.

Does the hero have a dog? Yes. It wouldn't be a Beards & Bondage story if the hero didn't have a dog. Silas has five dogs. We're talking Will Graham levels of dogs. So many dogs..

Hello, readers! I know I haven't been writing a lot in my blog or anywhere else lol. Sadly I've been on a slump, plus a book slump after finishing Permanent Ink by Avon and Piper. I've been slowly reading this other book and maybe I'll actually finish it today because it isn't that long either.

But today is another thing. Today I bring you a fun blog post written by Maya Chhabra, author of Walking on Knives, this new novella that is a retelling of the Little Mermaid but with a twist, because the Little Mermaid actually falls for the Sea Witch's sister. I'll leave you all the info and details for the book and then you can read the post which it's fabulous.
The little mermaid has no idea that as she makes her way on land, she's being watched over by the sister of the very witch with whom she made her bargain. She has no idea that the witch's sister is falling in love with her.

When the prince decides to marry another woman, the little mermaid's secret helper offers her a chance to live. But the price may be too high…

Trigger warning: Rape scene.

Every writer starts out as a reader—and generally remains one for the rest of their life. Here are just four of the great SFF books (both YA and adult) with lesbian, gay, and bisexual characters that have inspired me as a writer.

1) THE WINGED HISTORIES by Sofia Samatar
—Sofia Samatar, a mixed-race Mennonite author, created the fictional country of Olondria, where the standard look is much more like herself than like the white default, and populated it with wonderful characters like Tavis, an aristocratic swordmaiden fighting for her country’s independence (but it’s more complicated than that) and Seren, a female poet from a nomadic, marginalized culture, who falls in love with Tavis while remaining deeply ambivalent about war.

2) THE TRAITOR BARU CORMORANT by Seth Dickinson
—In its dissection of imperialism’s evil and its focus on queer women of color, this is THE WINGED HISTORIES’ grimdark twin. Baru is a lesbian who has to hide her sexuality—and her political opinions—while rising through the ranks of the empire that conquered her homeland. This requires her to control herself completely, but when she meets Tain Hu, a warrior duchess, she begins to fall in love. It all ends in tears. What fascinates me is the contrast between the two central characters—one cerebral, tightly wound, and accustomed to deceit, the other playful, physical, and deeply honorable, though not without a cunning streak.

3) CARNIVAL by Elizabeth Bear
—Bear, who is bisexual, crafts a thrilling spy adventure that combines ethical dilemmas with a great romance in a dystopian future. Two black men, diplomats from a patriarchal society ruled by killer robots, travel to a planet where men are oppressed instead. They’re supposed to steal the energy source that could mean freedom from the robots, but things quickly become more complicated. What price are they willing to pay to liberate their society?

4) THE SCORPION RULES by Erin Bow
—Erin Bow’s YA science fiction novel revolves around Greta, a princess/hostage who is slowly learning to question the justice of the system she lives under. She’s also slowly coming to terms with her feelings for the Asian princess she shares a room with. But there’s plenty of action to match the character development as a foreign general targets Greta—and draws the attention of the AI who rules the world. While the racial diversity in this book is sometimes not handled perfectly, the sequel, THE SWAN RIDERS, introduces even more and better-developed POC characters. There’s also a major mixed-race Jewish character who appears in both books.

Hello, my wonderful travelers of the book world! You must have seen me scream about this book in Twitter a lot lately. You know why? Because it's so frigging good! Today I bring you to my tour stop in the blog tour of Heart of the Steal. And I hope I convince you to buy this book and read it because it will be one of your favorites as well.

Title: Heart of the Steal
Author(s): Avon Gale, Roan Parrish
Publisher: Philtre Press
Release date: July 11, 2017

Synopsis:
Responsible, disciplined William Fox channeled his love for art and his faith in the rules into being an FBI Art Crimes agent. Right and wrong, justice and injustice—the differences are clear, and Will has spent his career drawing a line between them. Maybe his convictions have cost him relationships, but he’s not willing to compromise what he knows is right. Until the night he meets Amory Vaughn.
As the head of his family’s philanthropic foundation, Vaughn knows very well that being rich and powerful can get him almost anything he wants. And when he meets endearingly grumpy and slightly awkward William Fox, he wants him more than he’s wanted anything. Vaughn is used to being desired for his name and his money, but Will doesn’t care about either.
When Vaughn falls back on old habits and attempts to impress Will by stealing a painting Will admires, their nascent bond blows up in his face. But Vaughn isn’t willing to give up on the glimpse of passion he saw the night he took Will apart. Before Will knows it, he’s falling for the man he should have arrested, and Vaughn has to realize that some things can’t be bought or stolen. Love has to be given freely. But can a man who lives by the rules, and a man who thinks the rules don’t apply to him, ever see eye to eye?
Heart of the Steal is a standalone romance with a happy ending. It features a Southern gentleman who thinks he’s always right, a buttoned-up FBI agent who secretly likes his buttons unbuttoned, and wall sex. And desk sex. And picnic blanket sex.

I am obsessed with Heart of the Steal. It is one book I couldn't stop reading since start to finish (only taking time for sleeping and eating). But I tell you all ~ this is one book you will definitely enjoy if you love adorable domestic ships, a cute kitten that is adopted, a rich southern art thief/philantropic business man, an fbi agent working in the arts crime department, some hate to love, lots of delicious food and fun soft times between these two.

I can't help to say that this book brought me feels just as much as Illegal Contact by Santino Hassell (coming out August this year). They both have a very adorable couple who just wants to be together forever and even *cough* Vaughn thinks of marriage at one point? This makes me so happy and it's so cute to see it in books.

Let's talk about my experience: First of all, this is my first time reading books by these two authors, I believe. Yes. And it didn't disappoint me AT ALL. I want to read more by them! I already have some Avon Gale book in my Kindle and I have some Roan's books in my WL ready for me to get them. I can say that this duo of authors is 10/10 in my list. If they write more books together, you bet I'm going to be there first in line to get their books. Heart of the Steal was fun and romantic and had some pretty sexy scenes in there as well. But most of all, what I enjoyed is the way it made me so happy to read about Will and Vaughn finding their way to each other.

The relationship starts as a light hate to love mainly because Vaughn steals a painting to impress Will though he didn't know Will worked as an FBI agent in the Arts Crime department. So Will of course gets really mad and conflicted because he has to go and arrest Vaughn. Let's skip all of the spoilers and I will just say that what comes after is very much a fun story about love and family and life, to be honest. The simple things almost always are the most important.

Excerpt

“So, William. You came. But something tells me the sentiment behind my invitation has gone rather astray.”
“Then you admit that you left the Staunton painting and a note outside my apartment,” he said flatly, and my eyes narrowed.
“Have I miscalculated your interest?”
William looked like he couldn’t decide whether to laugh or yell. It was smoldering.
“You have miscalculated my profession,” he responded. We were standing close enough to kiss, and when he reached a hand into his jacket, my breath caught. I wanted to help him strip it off and kiss that spot of barbeque sauce off his perfect mouth.
But he didn’t take his jacket off. He slipped his hand out holding something from his pocket. A badge.
An FBI badge.
I was lightheaded. I spent three beats of my heart wondering what the medical diagnosis would be for dying of sheer irony.

Authors

Avon Gale wrote her first story at the age of seven, about a “Space Hat” hanging on a rack and waiting for that special person to come along and purchase it — even if it was a bit weirder than the other, more normal hats. Like all of Avon’s characters, the space hat did get its happily ever after — though she’s pretty sure it was with a unicorn. She likes to think her vocabulary has improved since then, but the theme of quirky people waiting for their perfect match is still one of her favorites.

Avon grew up in the southern United States, and now lives with her very patient husband in a liberal midwestern college town. When she’s not writing, she’s either doing some kind of craft project that makes a huge mess, reading, watching horror movies, listening to music or yelling at her favorite hockey team to get it together, already. Avon is always up for a road trip, adores Kentucky bourbon, thinks nothing is as stress relieving as a good rock concert and will never say no to candy.

At one point, Avon was the mayor of both Jazzercise and Lollicup on Foursquare. This tells you basically all you need to know about her as a person.

Roan Parrish lives in Philadelphia where she is gradually attempting to write love stories in every genre.

When not writing, she can usually be found cutting her friends’ hair, meandering through whatever city she’s in while listening to torch songs and melodic death metal, or cooking overly elaborate meals. She loves bonfires, winter beaches, minor chord harmonies, and self-tattooing. One time she may or may not have baked a six-layer chocolate cake and then thrown it out the window in a fit of pique.

She is represented by Courtney Miller-Callihan of Handspun Literary Agency.

Hello, you all! Today is blog tour day ~ And I bring you a very fun and cute novel I recently read by Entangled Teen, Crush imprint. This is my first time reading this author/series, because I believe this is the third one in the series, but it didn't affect my reading and actually made me a bit curious about the previous couples.

Title: The Perfectly Imperfect Match
Series: Suttonville Sentinels #3
Author: Kendra C. Highley
Publisher: Entangled Teen Crush
Release date: July 10th, 2017

Synopsis:
Pitcher Dylan Dennings has his future all mapped out: make the minors straight out of high school, work his way up the farm system, and get called up to the majors by the time he’s twenty-three. The Plan has been his sole focus for years, and if making his dreams come true means instituting a strict “no girls” policy, so be it.
Lucy Foster, needlepoint ninja, big sister to an aspiring pitcher, and chicken advocate, likes a little mayhem. So what if she gets lost taking her brother to baseball camp…at her own high school? The pitching coach, some hotshot high school player, obviously thinks she’s a hot mess. Too bad he’s cute, because he’s so not her type.
Problem is, they keep running into each other, and every interaction sparks hotter than the last. But with Dylan’s future on the line, he has to decide whether some rules are made to be broken…
Disclaimer: This book contains a crazy night of moonlit skinny-dipping, a combustible crush, and kisses swoony enough to unwind even the most Type A athlete.

If you want an opposites attract, The Perfectly Imperfect Match is just for you.

I had such a good time reading this book seriously. It's so fun and light and a perfect read for summer! It actually develops in the summer, more specific, in baseball summer camp, because Lucy's little brother is going to camp and she meets Dylan there. He is coaching the little kids and actually has this big Plan for his future because he loves baseball and wants to have a career in the game.

However they meet each other and everything goes out the window.

It was adorable and I love the fact that Dylan was clearly Shook by Lucy lmao. All the little things Lucy did, Dylan was like "omg this girl is my wife" plus they have so many cute moments, with family and friends. I love that their friends are SUCH A BIG PART of their lives. Because sometimes in books when the love interest is announced somehow the MCs forget for a moment they have best friends. But this is why I loved this book because Tristan and Serena are there always supporting their friends and being just so caring for one another. Many points for that! (plus the chickens!)

I love the dynamics since the start because Dylan is very hot and cold towards Lucy because he thinks he is going to get distracted by anything, especially by Lucy. So he wants to have his head on the game. But there are fireworks when these two are together and actually they had this adorable fight in the beginning where they are left alone at sea and just exploded *lmao* I had so many feel you all.

I'm really glad I picked this up! Thank you Entangled Teen for the review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Kendra C. Highley lives in north Texas with her husband and two children. She also serves as staff to four self-important and high-powered cats. This, according to the cats, is her most important job. She believes in everyday magic, extraordinary love stories, and the restorative powers of dark chocolate.

Hello, my lovely readers! I wanted to do another book recommendations blog post because I love them and it's always fun to write them (but also really hard to find the exact books that match the theme of the post). Either way I am very excited to share with you this one. It's rather different (?) maybe, of what I usually write, but I thought it'd be a fun way to promote books/support books.

Of course I will have something wrong or some people might say that "that book doesn't belong there!" or some stuff like that. It's okay, I know that it could happen. I see them this way and I totally approve of people who might view it differently. I would like to think that the characters might go to Camp Halfblood and just spend a summer there.

I did take some characteristics of PJO's gods (some friends helped me with it. Shout out to Eri, Mana, Sue, Cam, Liv, @UtopiaMind, @CandidCeillie!). But I also researched more about the gods and what kind of gods they were so I could find more books. So it definitely has a bit of everything; I don't know if I need to put as title "Books based on Greek Gods" "Books Based on Camp Halfblood Cabins" or just anything to do with greek gods lmao.

Good morning my fellow book bloggers/readers/unicorns. It can't be a surprise this topic is on my book blog. I talk about it a lot on Twitter @thebookvoyagers. And the reason why I talk about sports romances a lot is because I really really love sports. I can tell you a lot of facts about football, some tennis facts, I can definitely follow baseball and basketball, soccer I'm not a huuuuge fan but I can definitely watch and enjoy, but to be honest I can stan every sport because I love competitions and I love teamwork and the story behind those players you see on the screens. Which it is a shame that in the book world somehow authors forget that people of color also play sports... ,

Probably two of the sports most seen in books? Hockey and football. Football? Black players dominate that sport 100% no joke. There are also Latinx players, but mostly we see a lot of black players in different positions. Then why the heck I am only seeing white quarterbacks on the cover of romance books? Or wide receivers? Or runner backs? (These are the usual positions we see players have in books. There also many more positions, give me a safety or a linebacker, tbh I'm biased but the defense is the best side of the game). Ok we do see white QBs but do you know the current winner of the National Championship in college is Clemson and their former QB, who played in that game, is Deshaun Watson, a black man. He then took part of the NFL Draft of this year and was drafted by the Houston Texans to be their starting QB in the upcoming season.

Want more proof? The Heisman Trophy, an award given to the most outstanding player in college football, the 2016 winner was Lamar Jackson, a black QB who plays in the Cardinals. Like it's not possible to keep seeing on Netgalley more and more football romances that have white QBs/or players in general (and they gracing us on the cover with their abs). It isn't believable. Like I guess you all want white people to rule sports but to be honest, there are sports that it just isn't happening.

Don't tell me that in a book the hero is one of the best players in college football when (I'm taking it from 2009) when in 6 of those 8 years the winner of the Heisman Trophy has been a black player and in 2014, Marcus Mariota won. (Marcus is of Samoan descent).

So you see, you can't expect me to believe that in a team inside a book there are only three players of color/black players, that they always get to be the comic relief and authors never write them their own happily ever afters. When in reality they are winners and captains of offense/defense in actual professional football teams.

So many white abs.
And look at the ratings. Then look at these.

I know many sports romances take place in college in books. We see that a lot in hockey books. There is a wide variety of college books that the hero plays hockey. Now I know hockey is majorly white. I don't know much about the hockey community so I can't comment tbh. But this is a big reason why hockey books are just not... appealing to me.

One type of sport is not... really seen a lot in books. And that is basketball. Maybe people think they can't get away with keep using white players. Because we all know the best players of that league are black. Basketball is such an amazing and thrilling game, I'm sad to see that not many people write about it. I am sure there are books out there with basketball as their sport, in fact, I even did a list with 5 books that have basketball as its theme. But in the popular section of books, it isn't there, you know? With all the big shots and the Amazon best sellers or whatever, you don't find many or.. any at all.

Kimani is a Harlequin imprint that does publish a LOT of people of color in sports books and in romance books in general. It's amazing. I recommend you all the check it out and just TBR everything in there. Plus the covers actually show POC!!! I will make a section of books you can read that have people of color as main characters at the end of this post ~

One other sport I see little of is gymnastics. But the ones I've read (not many tbh) the heroine always is white. Why is that? I mean sure the big teams in the Olympics are always the European ones, so we see a lot of Russian heroines in books. But you can't expect me to be like oh yeah after two Olympics ago when Gabby Douglas was #1 on top of the world and then in Rio last year when Simone Biles became queen of the floor and Queen of Rio. Also erasing the Chinese team from the Olympics like they are one of the best gymnastics team and also one of the best high diving teams.

Serena Williams? #1 in the world for so many years in tennis? Brazil's soccer team is the Olympic gold medalist right now. The best F1 racer is Lewis Hamilton. And I can keep going you all... Baseball: The majority of the players playing in the major league [MLB] right now are Latinx. Javier Báez was named co-MVP at the MLB finals last year when the Cubs won. There are so many Puerto Rican and Dominican players in the league and I'm shocked not to see that representation on paper.

I want to believe that this can get better (meaning POC in romances with sports) and there are books that make me believe that it can get better in the upcoming months/the next year to come. However I see readers not picking up those books and instead they prioritize sports romances written by white authors and those books whitewash sports that, in real life, aren't like that.  And it just makes me not want to read sports romances anymore because people come up with the same storyline with practically the same characters but different names. I didn't sign up for that.

Sports is the most diverse thing in the world. Nevertheless the books coming out right now don't reflect that....
